I chose to focus on the importance of properly citing sources when writing a paper that uses unoriginal ideas. There are two different styles of citation, MLA and APA, that are very important to familiarize ourselves with, particularly while we are still in college. This video provides insight as to how to properly cite sources from different places like books, magazines, websites, etc. It is extremely important to learn the fundamentals of citaion in order to avoid committing the offense of plagiarism. Following these simple steps can assure you that you will not be infringing on someone else's ideas, and that the information you have attained for your writing assignment is credited to the correct person.

Everyone needs to know how to cite, and videos are a good way to learn.
ReplyDeleteProper citation can make the difference between a great work of writing and a lawsuit. There is nothing wrong with including other people's opinion or writing within your own, so long as you cite it - properly. That being said, it would have gone great to cite the Youtube clip above. I'm only kidding, but something to think about...
ReplyDeleteWow, a video from Abu Dhabi. I've been there! Don't say, "I chose to..." as it sounds like internal communication rather than external communication. Remember your target audience are potential clients who will use your professional writing service.
ReplyDeleteThere are more than 2 citation styles. You could have given some examples of fields that use MLA and fields that use APA to help your readers. Humanities people use MLA; education people use APA, etc.
Hi Bret,
ReplyDeleteYour post is dead on! As much of a pain as it is to properly site work, it is extremely important. You can get in a lot of trouble if you don't reference your work. My high school English teachers were extremely strict on citations and gave you an F if they had to tell ask you more than once where you sited your source. I'm glad you listed the different citation styles, I often forget that there's more than just MLA because I was so used to using that in high school for English.
