Writing Effective Emails by Brett Diamond

Writing emails may seem like a small task, and a pointless thing to waste time learning about, but in actuality they are very important and must be done correctly. The first thing, anyone does, or should do is make the subject line. The subject line allows the reader to know the topic of the email before he/she even opens it. The subject line is similar to a Newspaper heading, and without a heading, no one would take time to read it. After you correctly make the subject line, start writing the email, making sure it is not to long, and stays on a certain topic. If you need to write an additional email concerning a different matter, it will be no problem because unlike letters, emails are free. After you have finished the body of the email, make sure to tell the reader how to respond, and what to respond to. It is also smart to include any contact information they may need including phone number and address.

  1. Great posting! It makes you wonder what will happen to the Post Office in the long-run.

  2. Great post Brett. I will definetly keep that in mind next time I write an email. Also, Kevin makes a good point. I heard recently that the post office ran a substantial defecit last year and may cut mail delivery down to fewer days per week. Currently it is one of the only Federal Agencies that is independantly funded, that is it relies on the revenues it makes rather than taxes to function.

  3. Great post Brett. This is something we will all use, if not now we will use it on the future. Email is pretty much the new way of communication and it has become a professional thing. I think it's cool rather than waiting for letters! It's a very informational post and keep up the great work!

  4. Emails are easy and free, can't say that about the post office.

  5. How about a graphic, Brett? I have always taught my students to write your first news paragraph and extract words from that first paragraph to include in your subject heading. That way you are sure to include the news, or purpose, of your correspondence in your subject heading.
